What are Antiallergic drugs?

At times our body comes into contact with certain substances against which our body is not resistant, and it makes chemicals called histamines; which again manifests into various reactions or symptoms of allergy in us. The very purpose of antiallergic drugs is to reduce or block or stop the production of histamines that causes allergic reactions. Hence such drugs are often referred to as antihistamines.

Some common symptoms of allergy are as follows:

  • Anaphylaxis
  • Coughing
  • Dark under eyes or dark circles
  • Extremely dry, itchy skin with blisters or inflammation
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent headaches
  • Hives
  • Itchy eyes
  • Itchy nose
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Sore or scratchy throat
  • Stuffy nose
  • Watery eyes

How do Antiallergic drugs or Antihistamines work?

Antihistamines suppress histamine-induced swelling and vasodilation, by blocking the binding of histamine to its receptors or reducing the histamine receptor activity on nerves, vascular smooth muscle, glandular cells, endothelium, and even mast cells.
