What are Anti-Parkinson Drugs?
Anti-Parkinson medicines or drugs are simply agents to treat Parkinson’s disease (PD or just Parkinson’s) or other conditions of parkinsonism; which is a long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that mainly affects the motor system.
These pharmaceutical drugs are commonly referred to as COMT or the catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitors, MAO-B or monoamine oxidase B inhibitors, and muscarinic receptor antagonists.
Major Anti-Parkinson Drugs
- Dopamine-receptor agonists
Mechanism of Anti-Parkinson Drugs
Anti-Parkinson medicines or drugs act on the dopaminergic system in the striatum and basal ganglia or are centrally acting muscarinic antagonists.
Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease
The symptoms usually take much time to be much evident or visible and as time passes by, the non-motor symptoms become more common.
- The most common earliest symptoms of PD include tremor, rigidity, difficulty in moving and walking.
- Dementia also becomes common in the advanced stages of Parkinson's disease.
- Cognitive and behavioural problems along with depression, anxiety and apathy.
- Problems with sleeping cycle and sensory systems.
- Even the main motor symptoms together are referred to as parkinsonism or parkinsonian syndrome.
Causes behind Parkinson’s Disease
Till now the exact causes of PD are unknown. But both inherited and environmental factors are considered to be responsible for this disease. Apart from having affected family members, being exposed to certain pesticides or prior head injuries also increases the risk of getting the disease.
