What is Ammonium Chloride?
Ammonium chloride or NH4Cl, happens to be an inorganic compound and a white crystalline salt that is highly water soluble. Solutions made of this salt are mildly acidic in nature. In its naturally occurring mineralogic form, it is known as sal ammoniac, and is the product from the reaction of hydrochloric acid and ammonia. It is most commonly used as fertilizer and a flavouring agent in some types of liquorice.
This mineral is commonly formed on burning coal dumps from condensation of coal-derived gases, or even in certain types of volcanic vents.
How is the mechanism of an Ammonium Chloride based drug?
The mechanism of Ammonium chloride is quite simple as it increases acidity by increasing the amount of hydrogen ion concentrations.
It can be used as an expectorant due to its irritative action on the bronchial mucosa; which again causes the production of respiratory tract fluid which in order facilitates the effective cough.
It should be mentioned here that, Ammonium ion is converted to urea in the liver; chloride ion replaces bicarbonate.
