What is an Azithromycin Tablet?
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic medication used for the treatment of a number of infections caused by bacteria.
It should be noted here that antibiotics like the azithromycin tablets are strictly for bacterial infections and would not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. One should also note that unnecessary usage of antibiotics eventually destroys the effectiveness when actually needed.
How do Azithromycin Tablets work?
In order to grow or replicate, bacteria follow a definite routine of protein synthesis, enabled by ribosomal proteins. What Azithromycin does is that it binds to the 23S rRNA of the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit; which actually stops bacterial protein synthesis by inhibiting the transpeptidation/translocation step of protein synthesis and by inhibiting the assembly of the 50S ribosomal subunit.

Azithromycin in Covid-19 Treatment
Researchers are studying the prospects of Azithromycin as a single drug and even in combination with other medications, for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Although currently, azithromycin is been used with hydroxychloroquine to treat certain patients with COVID-19, there are mixed reports of the effectiveness to treat similar other viral respiratory infections. It is also been used to treat bacterial infections in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.
Further research is needed before any definite statement can be made regarding the possible benefits and risks of using azithromycin either alone or in combination with hydroxychloroquine in patients with COVID-19.
