What is Bromhexine?
Derived from the Adhatoda vasica plant, Bromhexine is a mucolytic drug used in the treatment of respiratory disorders associated with viscid or excessive mucus. It is used to decrease the viscosity of mucus in the airway, enhancing mucus clearance, apart from a variety of other respiratory conditions associated with increased mucus secretion. This pharmaceutical drug is widely available as a common OTC medicine.
Recently, bromhexine and its metabolite ambroxol have garnered interest for the potential prevention and treatment of COVID-19 due to their interactions with cell receptors in the lungs.
How is the mechanism of Bromhexine?
Bromhexine is supposed to inhibit the transmembrane serine protease 2 receptor (TMPRSS2); whose activation has a crucial role in viral respiratory diseases such as influenza A and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).
Off late, in vitro researches have suggested the action of ambroxol (which is a metabolite of bromhexine) on the angiotensin-converting enzyme receptor 2 (ACE2), prevents the entry of viral envelope-anchored spike glycoprotein of SARS-Cov-2 into alveolar cells or increases the secretion of surfactant. Hence it is useful in the treatment of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as well.
