What is Ciprofloxacin?
Ciprofloxacin is a second generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, that is used to treat a number of infections; including bone and joint infections, intra abdominal infections, certain types of infectious diarrhea, respiratory tract infections, skin infections, typhoid fever, and urinary tract infections, and many more. Ciprofloxain and its derivatives are also being studied for their respective mechanisms against malaria, cancer and AIDS.
How does Ciprofloxacin work?
Ciprofloxacin is much active against many Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria. It demonstrates its mechanism via inhibiting the bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. It simply targets the alpha subunits of DNA gyrase prevents it from supercoiling the bacterial DNA which prevents DNA replication.
Basically, It binds on to the bacterial DNA gyrase with much affinity of mammalian DNA gyrase. There is no cross resistance between fluoroquinolones and other classes of antibiotics, so it may be helpful in cases when other antibiotics are not found to be enough effective.
