What is Clobetasol Propionate?   

Clobetasol propionate is a type of corticosteroid that is used to treat several skin conditions. Its usage is recommended only for a short term, in case other weaker corticosteroids are not found to be that effective. 

 

How does Clobetasol Propionate work? 

Corticosteroids bind to the glucocorticoid receptor, inhibiting pro-inflammatory signals, and promoting anti-inflammatory signals. This means, corticosteroids like clobetasol propionate, bind on to the glucocorticoid receptor and mediate to bring changes in the gene expression that leads to multiple downstream effects over hours to days. 

Glucocorticoids, on their part, inhibit neutrophil apoptosis and demargination. They inhibit phospholipase A2, which decreases the formation of arachidonic acid derivatives. Apart from inhibiting NF-Kappa B and other inflammatory transcription factors; they promote anti-inflammatory genes like interleukin-10.
