What is Guaiphenesin or Guaifenesin?

Guaiphenesin is a Bronchodilator, or medication that is used as an expectorant, which is required to pull out or rather, cough out phlegm from the airways. It is also sometimes combined with dextromethorphan, an antitussive cough suppressant.

Chemically speaking, this pharmaceutical drug is an ether of guaiacol and glycerine; which has muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant properties and may act as an NMDA receptor antagonist.

How does Guaiphenesin work?

Guaiphenesin is supposed to act as an expectorant by increasing the volume and reducing the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi. It may help in the flow of respiratory tract secretions, by smoothening the ciliary movement; in order to carry the loosened secretions up towards the pharynx. Thus, it may increase the efficiency of the cough reflex and smoothen the ejection of the secretions.

Moreover, it is also further proposed that expectorants like Guaiphenesin, may also act as an irritant to gastric vagal receptors, and hence recruit efferent parasympathetic reflexes that can elicit glandular exocytosis that is comprised of a less viscous mucus mixture.
