What is Iodochlorhydroxyquin?
Iodochlorhydroxyquin, also known as Clioquinol or Clioquinol-Hydrocortisone, is an antifungal and antiprotozoal drug. It is supposed to be a member of drugs family called hydroxyquinolines; which inhibits certain enzymes related to DNA replication, and has been found highly effective against both viral and protozoal infections. This popular pharmaceutical drug also shows some neurotoxic characteristics.
How does Iodochlorhydroxyquin work?
Although the exact mechanism of its action is yet unknown, Iodochlorhydroxyquin is basically a bacteriostatic. It happens to be a broad-spectrum antibacterial with antifungal properties.
The topical application of clioquinol over extensive or eroded areas of the skin may lead to increased protein-bound iodine (PBI) levels within a week’s time. In addition to this, the PBI levels may also get increased when relatively small areas of the skin are treated with clioquinol for more than one week.
