What is Metformin?
Metformin is an FDA-approved antidiabetic pharmaceutical drug. It is a biguanide antihyperglycemic used in conjunction with diet and exercise for glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It is also used off-label for insulin resistance in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
What are the uses of Metformin?: Medical Conditions Treated by Metformin
This medication is primarily used to treat symptoms of type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, it is also used off-label for insulin resistance in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Apart from that it is also associated with the treatment of cardiovascular problems, End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), and decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate.
How does Metformin work?
Metformin's mechanisms of action are unique from other classes of oral antihyperglycemic drugs. Metformin decreases blood glucose levels by decreasing hepatic glucose production (also called gluconeogenesis), decreasing the intestinal absorption of glucose, and increasing insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.
How long does Metformin take to show full results?
Metformin may start to work within the first week of treatment. But it takes about 2 months for it to have its full glucose-lowering effect.
