What is Methyl Salicylate?

In terms of chemical composition, Methyl salicylate is an organic compound havin the formula of C8H8O3. To be precise, it is the methyl ester of salicylic acid. It is a colorless, viscous liquid with a sweet, fruity odor reminiscent of root beer, but often get termed as "minty", as it is a popular ingredient in mint candies. It is produced by many species of plants, particularly wintergreens; while it can also be produced in labs synthetically, as a fragranting or a flavoring agent.

So far is functionality is concerned, Methyl Salicylate a topical counter-irritant used for the symptomatic relief of acute musculoskeletal pain in the muscles, joints and tendons. It is generally used in higher concentrations when it comes to the rubefacients and analgesics

Interestingly, Methyl salicylate is a popular agent in many of the general products sold as OTC items at any medical store; as it is used in low concentrations, like around 0.04% or even under, as a flavoring agent in chewing gum, mouth freshners, etc.

Methyl salicylate is also used as an antiseptic in some mouthwashes and also as a fragranting agent to various products and as an odor-masking agent for some organophosphate pesticides.

How does Methyl Salicylate work?

Methyl salicylate relieves musculoskeletal pain in the muscles, joints, and tendons by inducing irritation and reddening of the skin due to dilated capillaries and increased blood flow. It is pharmacologically similar to aspirin and other NSAIDs.

Pharmaceutical drugs like Methyl Salicylate are considered to be quite useful in treating musculoskeletal pain as the irritation of the sensory nerve endings is thought to alter or offset pain in the underlying muscle or joints that are served by the same nerves. This is supposed to cover up the underlying musculoskeletal pain and discomfort.

When applied topically, this magical drug is supposed to sink deep in the skin and underlying tissues where it reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme and locally and peripherally prevents the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin and thromboxane A2.
