What is Metronidazole?
Metronidazole is a pharmaceutical drug used as antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication, having anti-inflammatory properties as well. It can be used as either alone or with even combined other antibiotics.
How does Metronidazole work?
Metronidazole belongs to the nitroimidazole class of pharmaceutical drugs. It is supposed to inhibit nucleic acid synthesis by forming nitroso radicals, which disrupt the DNA of microbial cells. This process can be achieved when metronidazole is partially reduced, and because this reduction usually happens only in anaerobic bacteria and protozoans, it has relatively little effect upon human cells or aerobic bacteria.
Let’s understand the mechanism is a simpler way. Once metronidazole is administered in a body, via any of the dosage forms, it enters cells by passive diffusion; post which ferredoxin or flavodoxin reduces its nitro group to nitro radicals.
The redox potential of the electron transport portions of anaerobic or microaerophilic microorganisms renders metronidazole selective to these organisms, which causes nitro group reduction, leading to the production of toxic metabolites, including N-(2-hydroxyethyl) oxamic acid and acetamide; which may damage DNA of replicating organisms.
