What is Omeprazole?
Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) and its effectiveness is similar to other PPIs. It is primarily used to treat various gastric acid-related disorders or GERD associated conditions; such as heartburn and gastric acid hypersecretion, and also in cases of treating any tissue damage and ulcers caused by gastric acid and H. pylori infection.
This pharmaceutical drug is the first clinical useful drug under its class, and its approval got followed by many other proton pump inhibitor drugs. It is equally effective among men, women and children.
How does Omeprazole work?
Omeprazole is a very common pharmaceutical drug, under the category of selective and irreversible proton pump inhibitor. It is supposed to suppress stomach acid secretion by specific inhibition of the H+/K+-ATPase system found at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells. As it is regarded as the acid (proton, or H+) pump within the gastric mucosa, omeprazole inhibits the final step of acid production.
Omeprazole is also knwon to inhibit both basal and stimulated acid secretion irrespective of the stimulus as it blocks the last step in acid secretion. This pharmaceutical drug binds non-competitively so it has a dose-dependent effect.
The inhibitory action of this drug starts off within one hour of its consumption via oral administration, and the maximum effect might happen within two hours. The duration of inhibition lasts upto 72 hours approximately.
It should be northern here that once the usage of omeprazole is stopped, the baseline stomach acid secretory activity comes back after three to five days. The inhibitory effect of omeprazole on acid secretion reaches maximum attainment after four days of repeated daily dosing.
