What is Phenylephrine?
Phenylephrine is an alpha-1 adrenergic agonist pharmaceutical drug; used as a mydriatic, nasal decongestant, and cardiotonic agent, or in the management of hypotension, in surgical times, along with the use of anesthetics.
Further speaking, Phenylephrine Hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt form of phenylephrine, a direct-acting sympathomimetic amine, chemically related to adrenaline and ephedrine; along with some potential vasoconstrictor properties.
This pharmaceutical drug is considered to be a postsynaptic alpha-adrenergic receptor agonist that causes vasoconstriction, increases systolic or diastolic pressures, reflex bradycardia, and stroke output.
Phenylephrine is an odorless white microcrystalline powder, which is quite bitter in taste, and has the pH (1% aqueous solution) value at around 5.
How does Phenylephrine work?
As mentioned above, Phenylephrine is an alpha-1 adrenergic agonist that mediates vasoconstriction and mydriasis depending on the route and location of administration. Systemic exposure to phenylephrine also leads to agonism of alpha-1 adrenergic receptors, raising systolic and diastolic pressure as well as peripheral vascular resistance. Increased blood pressure stimulates the vagus nerve, causing reflex bradycardia.
