How does Sertraline work?

Sertraline is known to selectively inhibit the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) at the presynaptic neuronal membrane, which in turn increases serotonergic activity. This again allows an increased synaptic concentration of serotonin in the central nervous system, which leads to multiple functional changes associated with enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission; which are mostly antidepressant in nature and act against obsessive-compulsive disorders.
